Hello! Thank you for your interest in writing! Since 1997 I’ve designed and taught non-academic, community writing workshops such as Write Your Life as a Woman, Collecting Your Memories and the Closet Fiction Writer’s Workshop. I presented the class as Faculty-in-Residence for the 2017 N.E.W. Leadership Texas, a national nonpartisan political training program for college women, hosted by the Women’s and Gender Studies Department at the University of Texas.
My writing credits include: Associate Editor for Texas EMS Magazine, commentary in Austin Monthly and Austin American-Statesman; the previous long-running “skirt tales” column in the original skirt! Magazine; body/mind/spirit column, features and reporting in the (Charleston) Post and Courier and the Columbia Free Times, Columbia Business Journal, Charleston Regional Business Journal, short stories and feminism column in Point. Currently I’m working on a longer format project, and by day I work at Renaissance Theaterworks – “theater by women for everyone” – in Milwaukee.
Originally from Piedmont, South Carolina, I now live in the Greater Milwaukee area of Wisconsin. For ten years I lived in Austin, Texas, and I’ve spent time in other cities such as Greenville, Columbia and Charleston, SC, Boulder, CO and Los Angeles, CA.
After 25 years, alumni of the classes are now spread all over the country and world. It’s great to reconnect with former students online to write during these tough times and to welcome new folks! I hope to write with you soon! – Dean
