Class Contract

I, _______________________________________, on this _____ day of ______________, 20__, gladly enter into this agreement with myself to enjoy the soul-filling creative adventure of writing. I also agree to write by hand—with pen or pencil on paper—and to trust the process.

I Promise To…

1. Be present.
My phone will be silenced and tucked away. Email, texts, social media, and voicemail can wait. For this time, writing comes first.

2. Keep my pen moving.
Even if I have nothing to say, I’ll keep writing. “I don’t know what to write” is perfectly acceptable. I trust that if I keep my pen moving, the magic will happen.

3. Write first, judge never.
I’ll let my thoughts land on the page before my inner critic has a chance to interrupt. Grammar, spelling, punctuation, and perfection can all take the day off.

4. Follow the prompt—or don’t.
The prompt is simply an invitation. I’ll follow wherever my pen and heart decide to go.

5. Share only if I choose.
“Pass” is always a complete sentence. If I do read aloud, I promise not to apologize before I begin.

6. Receive compliments graciously.
When someone says they enjoyed my writing, I’ll simply say, “Thank you,” and let myself believe them.

7. Help create a safe, judgment-free space.
I’ll respect everyone’s privacy, honor different experiences and perspectives, and offer kindness, encouragement, and applause, to others and to myself.

By signing below, I agree to show up with curiosity, courage, and compassion so that together we may discover the joy of writing, creating, exploring, and playing.
